CNExT:
Your Total Cancer Registry
Solution!

|
October 2005
TRYING TO DO MORE WITH LESS?
Your cancer registry caseload is increasing and you’ve asked for additional help to be able to continue to meet the COC Program Standards but your hospital administration says there is no funding available for increased staff. Or perhaps, due to hospital cut-backs, you have lost staff that was very much needed to keep up with the registry caseload and now you have to find a way to manage with less staff. C/Net Solutions may have a solution for you, a way to manage your workload at a lower cost than adding personnel.
This solution is our Cancer Alert System, or CAS. CAS automates the process of identifying potential cancer cases through pathology and medical discharge reports and brings them directly to your cancer registry. CAS eliminates the manual review of pathology and medical records reports and the manual look-up of cases within CNExT. It reduces tedious tasks and improves the completeness of case finding overall. It will also automatically update follow-up dates on cancer cases already existing in the CNExT database. All this for only a $2,000 annual fee.
C/NET Solutions has some customers who have already taken advantage of the CAS solution. Here’s what advantages they have found in adding CAS to their CNExT system.
Carly Ellenberg at Pearlman Comprehensive Cancer Center in Valdosta, GA, has found that CAS saves her time because she doesn’t have to sort out reportable vs non-reportable diagnoses from several different reports. CAS identifies the reportable diagnoses up front. She also saves time because she doesn’t have to manually key in a patient’s name for look-up in CNExT. Another big time saver for Carly is the automatic update of Date of Last Contact for cases already in the CNExT database.
Melinda McPherron at City of Hope in Duarte, CA, says that for her, reducing the manual input of data is crucial. She really appreciates the automatic completion of fields such as name, social security number, date of birth and primary site. Melinda finds it also helps workflow to be able to process casefinding on a daily basis rather than doing it less frequently and in large batches.

This month’s featured web site is the NCI's Cancer Dictionary, http://www.cancer.gov/dictionary. This site contains a dictionary of cancer terms that can be looked up by typing in the term or by selecting a letter of the alphabet. The dictionary is extensive and includes broadly related items, obscure terms and acronyms. It's a handy resource for the cancer registrar or any other person who has questions about cancer.
